Toravaig House Hotel

Mia and the rest of the staff made our two nights at Toravaig house a wonderful stay. Our room was really cute, with a nice bathroom and an incredibly comfortable bed. We mentioned that we planned to leave very early on checkout day for a hike up the Storr, and Mia kindly offered to leave packed lunches for us. She also left a lovely note. We’d definitely come back.

This was a really difficult situation. I’d booked several weeks ahead, drove all the way there, and found the place closed for off season. I don’t understand why I was able to book it. They said they’d tried calling a few days earlier, but I was abroad using an American phone number and hadn’t received an email. I was told my reservation had been moved to another hotel over an hour away. That left me scrambling to find somewhere at the last minute, and they refused to cover the difference in cost. Not cool, and not a good way to run a business.

The mattress was plush and gave us a great night's sleep, but the rest of the stay didn’t match some of the other reviews. We had the sea view Torabhaig room, a cozy little space, though the shower grout was dirty and the huge shower-head left hardly any room. I’m 5’6”, 110lbs and felt claustrophobic. Service was below average. Staff seemed annoyed when serving breakfast, perhaps because they were understaffed(?) and had a big group at Toravig, but the attitude wasn’t called for. When we came back after days out, nobody greeted us at reception, which felt like a lack of hospitality. Calling reception in the morning was no use either, as staff were busy doubling as restaurant servers. I probably wouldn’t stay again. Better service would have made a difference.

We only had a quick stay and wished we could have stayed longer to relax. We arrived late, updated the hotel through the booking app, and they helped us with dinner advice. We ate at Duisdale, which was lovely. Breakfast at the hotel the next morning was very good and peaceful.
