It's dog friendly, the facilities were very clean, and a pleasant woman was cleaning tables while chatting with customers. The town centre location is great. My visit started badly, though: after 60 years of drinking, I'd never been refused a taste of a beer before. The bar person said they don't give away free beer. I bought a pint anyway and enjoyed it, but the person behind the bar could have been more hospitable.

If we hadn't arrived so late, we would have gone elsewhere. The room was really rough, the mattress springs were all noticeable, and the shower was moldy. The TV was tiny and kept glitching, so we couldn't watch it. There was also a pile of garbage outside our window, and it looked like they never throw anything out. We'd spent two weeks travelling around the UK and had great stays in small places in small towns. This was by far the worst place we stayed in the country, only slightly better than a campground.

I loved this quirky little pub. Some of the decorations have a dark, macabre feel, so it may not suit everyone. It was a welcome escape from the pretentiousness in other parts of town, with a proper down-to-earth pub and locals. Thanks for giving us a bit of sanity.

The Old Royal Oak is a nice pub with rooms, and I highly recommend it. Rob, Shaz and the staff are first class whenever we visit.

A small pub, but the Yorkshire folk working there were great and the service was well done. The Sunday dinner was excellent, second only to my partner's home-cooked one. Great value and very filling. We'll definitely be back :)
