The secure parking was useful, though the host takes two of the four spaces for his own car and van. Wi-Fi was fast once I finally found it and connected, but the desk’s QR code shortcut didn’t work on my iPhone 17 Pro. The rest of the stay was awful. On arrival at 5:30pm, the host was cold and unwelcoming, didn’t even say hello or ask how I was, and made me feel like I was interrupting his plans to have dinner with family. In 35 years of travel, I’ve never experienced a worse attitude from a host. When I asked how to connect to Wi-Fi, he brushed me off and gave no answer. He also refused to serve breakfast at 9am because he had something to do that morning. The bedroom and bathroom were freezing. The bathroom’s electric radiator hadn’t even been switched on, and it took 4.5 hours to get the room comfortable. The dining and breakfast room was cold while I ate, though the breakfast ingredients were okay. Afterward, the host seemed keen to get rid of me. At 9:15am he knocked on my door and abruptly asked when I was leaving so he could prepare the room for that evening, even though checkout is allowed until 10am.

The Crown is an easy walk through the village and served an excellent evening meal at a reasonable price. I was in the area for work and stayed solo at The Barn in a mezzanine room, apparently their smallest. It still had everything I needed: a comfortable double bed, a roomy bathroom and a walk-in shower. I slept well without road noise, and breakfast was generous and excellent. Adrian welcomed me warmly and made me feel at home. I usually choose Premier Inns, but I’ll make a point of coming back here when work brings me nearby.

We had a really relaxed night and would happily come back. The converted barn is furnished nicely, and our room was spotless, with a huge bed and plenty of bathroom space. Breakfast was lovely, and nobody rushed us.

I booked two rooms for my mother and sister in December 2021, and they came away thoroughly impressed. Breakfast had loads of choice and was cooked to a high standard, with four kinds of coffee beans to choose from. The thoughtful touches stood out too: fascinating local guides, homemade cookies and filter coffee in the rooms. Everything was very clean, tastefully decorated, and showed no wear. The furniture was comfortable as well. I’m glad this place is just down the road from me, and I’d readily book it for more friends and family.
