The New Alexandra Hotel

The proprietor came across as kind in the practical, hands-on way: the sort of person who might tease you for not knowing how to change a tyre, then show you and help out. The place has that same no-fuss, quietly caring feel. I’d read the reviews first, and the older ones get a bit theatrical. Some complaints may have been fair, while others seemed overdone. Running a small hotel must be stressful, so the occasional brisk reply doesn’t seem like a hanging offence. I stopped in for a drink and ended up staying the night. I looked around properly and found things clean, tidy and comfortable. It feels run by hardworking, genuine people whose livelihood depends on getting things right.

Great value for money, and the location is fab. The two staff members we spoke to were friendly, and they got us a hair dryer and toilet roll straight away. The room looked nice and clean when we arrived, though it could have done with a quick once-over: there was a used tissue on the radiator, a sanitary towel in the toilet bin and a spoon on the floor by the bed. Small things that are easy to sort. The shower was only cold to warm on setting 6, but a slight turn hotter made it scalding. Maybe that’s just the shower model. We only stayed one night, so didn’t mention it. We didn’t use the bar or eat here, so can’t comment on those. The family room is up quite a lot of stairs, but we knew that when we booked. Seems especially suited to couples, particularly those with dogs.

We had a fantastic view, and the room was clean and quiet. The food was reasonably priced with good sized portions, and the staff were always glad to help. When we arrived, they were amazing with our luggage and our dog Sandy, and helped us get settled in the room. On our last night we had loads of fun with the owner and local people, who made us feel very welcome. We’ll definitely stay again soon.

The price was great for everything. I spent a few nights here, slept in a comfy bed, and had a lovely breakfast. The staff were all really nice, polite and helpful.
