I didn't go inside the Royal Courts of Justice, since stopping there was spontaneous, but just standing outside made me feel small in a good way. The history of London feels deep here. I took photos and videos, though they don't capture what it's like in person. If you're walking along the Strand, stop for a few minutes, sit on the steps, and watch people come and go. It's one of those London moments that stays with you, even if you can't quite say why. The building is striking, almost like something from a fantasy film. There's so much detail in the carvings, arches, and windows that you could look for ages. Even if law or history isn't your thing, the place has an atmosphere worth experiencing. The huge gates, footsteps echoing on the old stone pavement, and the sense of importance all feel surreal, as if time slows down. London has plenty of iconic sights, but this one feels both serious and peaceful.
I stopped to take pictures, and every angle of the Royal Courts of Justice looked impressive. Its detailed Gothic architecture really stands out in the middle of London. Even from outside, the building has a powerful, historic presence, and you can feel the importance of the place just by standing in front of it. If you like architecture or photography, it's worth pausing to admire and capture it.
This review is about the building. We visited during the Open Houses days rather than for court, so we got to see and photograph the interior. It's stunning and well worth coming for a tour, or a case.
★★★★★ The Royal Courts of Justice was one of the most beautiful buildings I came across in London. Its grand, historic look caught my eye straight away, with tall arches and intricate details. Even from outside, it looked majestic and beautifully preserved, and I had to stop and admire it.
Completed in 1882, this building was designed by George Edmund Street in the Victorian Gothic Revival style. Its pointed arches, detailed stonework, and cathedral-like scale give it an imposing presence. It houses the Senior Courts of England and Wales, which primarily handle civil cases, and is one of the country's most imposing judicial buildings. Before the 19th century, London's courts were spread across different sites. The building brought them together and was meant to represent legal unity and institutional authority, while conveying the solemnity, authority, and permanence of the law.
