Hotel 41

The staff were genuinely lovely and seemed focused on making guests happy. The reception and lounge also had plenty of character, with old books, a fireplace, and leather sofas. Still, I came away with a poor impression of the stay, though I know some of this is subjective. The hotel is on the building's top floor, and the routes to the rooms are very narrow with low ceilings. If you're claustrophobic, that could be difficult, though the ship's-cabin feel might suit some people. Our room was small, dark, and a bit worn, and the view wasn't appealing. The bathroom felt like a corridor, had nowhere to put things, and only one outlet, intended for razors. Breakfast felt expensive for what was on offer. The made-to-order section had a stated wait of 25 to 30 minutes, which seemed excessive.

I travel often for work and have stayed in all sorts of hotels. In my experience, paying for five stars often means the service disappoints, even if the decor doesn't. This stay felt completely different. I walked in to find a champagne cart, and the staff were warm, asked about me, and made an effort to get to know me. They even left a kind note hoping I'd enjoyed the event we hosted a few doors away. The attention to detail and the easy, friendly banter made it memorable and made me feel like royalty. I've already booked to come back in a couple of weeks. This is also the parent hotel of 100 Princess St in Edinburgh, which is stunning too.

Sharon's 50th birthday felt truly unforgettable, and we were wonderfully pampered throughout our stay. Being just a short walk from Victoria station was handy, and I'm already looking forward to returning. The welcome from Seamus and Ernie was wonderful. The little extras started right away: non-alcoholic rosé, snacks, a small fridge with ice cream, tea and delicious cookies at breakfast, plus a pantry. In the room, it felt like pure luxury, with every amenity I could want, including a hot water bottle, pillow spray, a bath with Epsom salts, more cookies, and buttery bed linen. There was also a beautifully handwritten note and a quote from Ibn Battuta, an extensive Muslim traveller, explorer and well esteemed scholar. Calling the experience wonderful hardly does it justice. This hotel has completely reset my standards.
