The horses were happy, which was what mattered most to us. From the hotel we could ride straight into the forest, and Alan was such a lovely, helpful man. He even joined us for a ride to a pub miles away for lunch, and we had great company along the way. The grounds were beautiful and the weather was lovely. My daughter had visited twice with friends before, and this time she and I brought our two horses. We did sometimes struggle to get phone reception, but we were on holiday. It's much more of a holiday place than somewhere for business. We were sad to leave, but we've already arranged to return at the same time next year. Thanks for everything, Alan. See you then.

I wasn't sure what to expect because the reviews here are so mixed, but I had a lovely stay. It's an old hotel in peaceful surroundings, with plenty of character: a billiards room, art, taxidermy and all that. Alan, the owner, was kind and friendly while I was travelling alone, and we had lots of good chats. If you enjoy quirky hotels with history, this is your sort of place.

The grounds are amazing, and we loved staying there with our horses. You can ride straight into the forest. The host is fascinating and friendly. It's a rare place, very dated but full of character. If you're after a pristine Premier Inn style hotel, this isn't for you. But if you want character, an experience and time to relax, go.

Alan made the stay special. He kindly took me and my horse out riding with his gorgeous forest pony Smokey, and we spent hours chatting. We even stopped at a pub with pens for the ponies. Riding like that had been a lifelong dream of mine, and his company made it even better. The house is a slice of heaven, so unique it feels like stepping back in time. There was something historic to look at on every wall, and you really should go up to the observation tower. Leaving was the only bad part. I'd stay forever if I could, and hope to return soon.

We've been here twice with our friends and horses, and this visit was for a hen do. The riding and the location are incredible, just as good as the first time. Alan works so hard to keep guests happy. He offered to take us riding, checked on the horses, and even offered to pop to the shop for us. We knew the hotel wasn't five-star, and its quirky style is part of what you should expect. It's not a fancy place like you'd choose for a business trip. We'll definitely be back for a third stay.
