Rock House Hotel

My wife and I spent a couple of nights at the Rock and had a great experience. The pub and reception were immaculate, with lovely decor and a nice feel thanks to the location. The rooms carried the same style and cleanliness, and our window looked straight out to the sea. Breakfast was excellent, made with good quality produce. There are two evening menus, traditional pub food and Thai. We chose Thai, which was freshly cooked, really tasty and restaurant quality. Couldn’t fault the Rock, and we’ll definitely stay again. 👍

The food and service were appalling. When we arrived, we told them about allergies, but had to check the options three times before they finally admitted those weren’t safe either. If we hadn’t kept pushing, our 8-month-old daughter could have become very ill. I asked for three different meals and was told one by one that each had run out. Nobody mentioned on arrival that half the menu was unavailable, especially disappointing when you want fish by the sea. I finally ordered a medium-rare steak, but it was brown in the middle and badly overcooked. My partner’s chicken and cheese burger tasted of dirty oil and was missing the cheese. They tried the steak again, but it came out rare-blue. I’d already finished my chips and didn’t send it back a second time, so I ate the chewy, flavourless meat. Nobody apologised or asked if we were satisfied. I emailed the restaurant to ask about its allergy policy and why we had to push so hard to keep our daughter safe, but got no reply. I felt it was only fair to let people know: they don’t cater for food allergies and take no accountability. Do not go.

Pam and Gary welcomed us so warmly that we felt at home straight away. Our rooms were immaculate, cosy and warm, with stunning views of this beautiful town. The restaurant food was incredible, and its staff were friendly and made us feel just as at home. We loved every moment at Rock House. Thank you to Pam, Gary and everyone there. ❤️

I’ve been coming to Lynmouth for years, and this place can be hit or miss. The garden is lovely and gets sun all day, the only spot in Lynmouth that does. This year the food wasn’t great, just chips, burgers and salad, along with sausage rolls and pasties. The staff try hard to be helpful and offer good service, but the bar lacks facilities. One day they couldn’t even make coffee. I hope the new owners invest and bring the place back to being brilliant.
