Dear Kriss, I'm writing to complain about my stay in Room 6 at Wilson Lodge. It was the most unpleasant hotel stay I've ever had, without exaggeration. I paid for a clean, comfortable room and that's not what I got. I'd like a full or partial refund as a goodwill gesture and recognition of the poor experience. I look forward to a prompt response. The cigarette smoke smell in the room was extremely strong and unpleasant as soon as I arrived. I told reception right away and asked to move, but was told the property was fully booked and no alternative was offered. I had nowhere else to stay that evening, so I stayed, though the smell was so overpowering I felt as if I'd been exposed to several packs of cigarettes. I had an extremely uncomfortable night's sleep. The next morning I told reception the stay had been unacceptable, but the response was disappointing. They offered a discount or free night on a future stay, even though I have no intention of returning. They said I should have raised it earlier, although I had done so at check-in. They also said financial compensation wasn't possible because the business was small, and blamed previous guests who had smoked in the room. I suggested Room 6 be taken out of service temporarily so another guest wouldn't face the same problem, but they dismissed that as too costly.

The bed was comfortable, but the rooms were noisy. The milk in the rooms was off, the TV didn't work, and the Wi-Fi wasn't good.

Warning: don't book through Agoda. They took payment for a room at Wilson Lodge that didn't exist, and the hotel said it wasn't an isolated incident. We had a confirmation email from Agoda and the money had been taken from my credit card, but when we arrived at Wilson Lodge there were no rooms available. After a long discussion, reception staff kept insisting, “It isn’t our fault,” even though I repeatedly assured them I understood. Eventually they realised we knew it wasn't their fault and needed help getting out of the situation. They contacted Wilson Lodge's manager, who told me this had happened before and the lodge had already complained to Agoda about the ongoing issue. Agoda support in Singapore then sent a rapid series of emails. At first they proposed giving me AgodaCash, which was completely unacceptable. I hadn't asked for or agreed to it, and I didn't have an Agoda account or want one. After I firmly pushed back, they finally agreed to put the money back on my credit card, as they should have done from the start. They only agreed after repeated demands. Avoid Agoda and book directly with the hotel instead.

There was a lovely lady at reception when we arrived, even though check-in is done by email on the morning of arrival, with the door code. We had a downstairs disabled room that was very clean and well stocked, with biscuits, croissants, fresh juice, milkshake and lots more. Breakfast ingredients were provided in the kitchen, where you cook for yourself. I'd totally recommend this place and would book again.

The hotel is close to the centre of Maidenhead, which was the only good thing about it. We asked for a quiet room but got Room 2, right next to the entrance, reception and kitchen, so it wasn't quiet at all. It was extremely hot, and none of the windows could be opened. There was a door to outside, but it was locked. With security concerns and a car parked inches away, we couldn't have left it open anyway. The bed was uncomfortable and we could feel the springs. When we booked, a free continental breakfast was offered, but on arrival we were told that was no longer an option. They said they could give us some breakfast items to eat in our room: two slices of bread, a packet of crumpets, a packet of pancakes, some cheap pre-packed pastries, two small butters and some cheap juice. There was no jam for the bread, no knife to spread the butter and, most ridiculous of all, no toaster. We wouldn't recommend this hotel.
