The big garden outside was a real highlight, and it’s close to the river Kennet if you like walking. I’d have booked a few weekends to fish there, especially for Barbel, but it was the close season. I’ve been staying here for the last four weeks and am actually looking forward to another four. I work away a lot and usually stick to the same places, but I found the Hatchet Inn by chance and didn’t know Wetherspoons offered rooms. The rooms are clean and cosy, the staff are friendly and efficient, and having a pub atmosphere makes me feel less alone when I’m away. The food is decent for what I paid, especially with a pint, and there’s a good choice that comes out quickly.

There’s a giant beer garden, breakfast starts at 7am, and the paid car park is about 10 feet behind the place. It was £50 for Friday night. The quilt and pillows were lovely, and the shower is massive. Just a tip, there aren’t any USB sockets, so bring a plug if you need to charge all your gadgets. Not a big problem.

The Buffalo chicken burger with chips and onion rings was enjoyable, though the buffalo sauce felt a bit out of place in the bun. Black Dragon was a good guest cider to have on tap. It’s a nice pub for dinner, with comfortable seating, big tables, and an old fashioned feel inside. The arched brickwork gives it character, and even the counter looks lovely.

We’ve stayed in three hotels in as many days on this road trip, and Wetherspoons has come out on top, ahead of Travel Lodge, with Premier Inns at the bottom so far. The room had everything we wanted and more, including a huge shower room and a lovely big comfortable bed. Great location too. Thanks! P.S. We did have Room 101, lol.

I came away disappointed with the food and service at one of my favourite pubs. The three plate shares weren’t the best I’ve had, the service was poor, and the toilets were terrible. Definitely not the best Spoons I’ve visited.
