The £10 mini dessert and coffee felt like a rip-off. The coffee was fine, but the plate had just two little Turkish Delight-looking cubes and half a tiny chocolate egg. I knew it wouldn’t be a full dessert, but three small sweets on a flat dish? We’d only come in for a light lunch and coffee, and I left really annoyed. We’d planned to bring 18 people from our club for Sunday lunch. That’s off now. I wouldn’t go back on principle.

It’s a lovely-looking pub in a brilliant spot, but the menu feels much like any other pub’s and doesn’t offer much choice. My starter tart was tiny, and the burger came without salad. With a few menu changes and more generous portions, I’d give it five stars. At this price, though, it was disappointing.

The team made such a difference, friendly, attentive, and full of useful knowledge. After a rough stay at another hotel just before Christmas, and a lot of travel following a close family bereavement, this place was a real tonic. Dogs are welcome throughout the bar and restaurant, with lovely bedding and bowls provided too. We came back after staying here a couple of years ago, and it was even better this time. Our family, including a rambunctious toddler, a neurotic whippet, and two tired adults, was welcomed warmly and shown to a beautifully decorated, exceptionally clean family suite. I’d happily move in! The food was very tasty, especially the smoked trout, and reasonably priced. The local ale was super too. This is easily the best pub hotel we’ve stayed in, and it’ll be our go-to stop whenever we’re in the area. Thanks so much for having us!

The food was really good, and I enjoyed the meal, just as the person who recommended this place said I would. The busy room made it hard to relax, though. There were lots of people and plenty of noise, children shouting and running about, cutlery clattering as it was dried by hand, and nearby conversations all around us. The tables are very close together. Finding the restaurant felt odd at first, since you have to walk all the way inside to reach it. I also found the service from the young waitresses poor and, in my opinion, unprofessional. Seeing them put on lip balm and then serve customers was uncomfortable. The atmosphere didn’t meet my expectations, which is why I can’t give it more stars.

The food arrived much colder than I’d expect, which was disappointing for the price. Portions were on the small side too, and there wasn’t much choice in the seasonal vegetables. The pub looks great inside and out, and the staff were good overall.
