The bed was comfortable, and breakfast was acceptable, but some of the things we ordered weren’t there, including the yogurts and black pudding. The orange juice tasted like watered-down sweet water. Rachel, the lady cooking and serving breakfast, was friendly, lovely and attentive. What should have been a five-star stay was let down by a string of small things that could have been dealt with easily. The room was freezing when we arrived because the heating wasn’t on, and it took hours to warm up. It was hard to get hold of a staff member, though when we finally did, they lent us a blow heater. That got the room warm, and it stayed that way. There was no hand soap in the bathroom and only one tiny bottle of shower gel, so we had to ask for those too. The bathroom extractor fan was off. When we switched it on, it blew the room’s electrics, and we found water leaking through the ceiling. We were disappointed after expecting a really enjoyable stay. These issues could all be improved with a little effort, but the main impression was that helping us felt like too much bother.

The bedroom was small but really comfortable, and breakfast was top notch. Geoff was friendly and flexible about check-in, too. I’m from the area and remember the Whitehouse when it was derelict. It’s lovely to see how much work Geoff has put into the beautiful building. Such a lovely hotel, and thanks for a great stay.

We had a very comfortable bed and a really good breakfast, and the hosts were welcoming and looked after us well. We stayed two nights in room 2 because we wanted a bath. The room was lovely and looked out to sea. We’ll book again next time we’re in the area.

We had a fantastic one-night stay. The hotel is well placed for visiting the coast, Durham, Beamish, Newcastle and lots of other local attractions. Our room was spacious and comfortable, it was very quiet, and breakfast the next morning was great.

The Whitehouse was an ideal base for our planned visit to the Stadium of Light and Durham city. Geoff and Alan were great hosts, and nothing was too much trouble. The place was nicely decorated and well presented, with plenty of parking. Some rooms have a sea view, which was a lovely bonus. Geoff’s breakfast was fantastic, especially his scrambled egg, which was second to none. Great stay! 😀
