The entrance was hard to spot from a busy dual carriageway, and if you miss it, getting back onto the right carriageway takes a long detour. Once inside, the place felt dingy and dirty, with a damp room and overgrown grounds. The website photos looked nothing like what was there and seemed years out of date. I was the only guest besides the man running the place, and I felt so unsafe that I pushed the single bed against the door, packed up, and left. It was advertised as superior four-star accommodation, but it didn’t come close to one star. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, especially a woman travelling alone.
I’ve worked as a contractor all over England, and this was easily my worst stay. I booked two nights but one was enough. The room was cramped, dated, damp, and looked like squatters had put it together. The bedding was damp too, and the bathroom and shower were tiny. Even the smoke alarm’s battery holder was hanging open with cobwebs, as if it had been without a battery for ages. They call this four-star? I can’t see how. Half a star at best. At £40-plus, it’s wildly overpriced. Honestly, £15 would be my absolute ceiling. I’ve never reviewed any hotel before, good or bad, but this one made me do it.
The shower was very good, and the host greeted me warmly. Still, the room wasn’t ready when I arrived, and the carpet was wet after being cleaned because a previous guest had spilled something. It was called a superior double, which it certainly wasn’t. The space had a smart TV, fridge, and microwave, but felt cold and damp, and I spent quite a while getting rid of creepy-crawlies. It could use some attention: there was gaffer tape under the shower cubicle, more tape on the ceiling, and the sink was pulling away from the wall. Parking was tight, with several abandoned cars dotted around. I barely slept because the bed was uncomfortable, which wasn’t ideal with an 8 am start at the Vox Conference Centre. Room 1 was described as a superior twin, and that didn’t fit either. The smoke alarm had no battery, and there was no WiFi, which really isn’t acceptable these days. I wouldn’t stay again, though the place has potential if those issues are sorted.
There was nobody at reception when I arrived. I rang the bell for half an hour and called the phone number, but got no answer either way. I ended up booking somewhere else and very much hope I’ll get a full refund.
We had booked for two nights, but after arriving around 7 pm on the first evening, I left by 11.30. The room smelled bad and felt damp, and the bed linen was damp as well. The carpet was filthy and the shower cubicle dirty. It looked nothing like the online pictures. There were no batteries in the smoke detectors, and the outside lights weren’t working. There was a small fridge and tea-making gear in the room, but that didn’t make up for the rest.
