The staff made us feel welcome, and any problems were sorted out quickly and politely. We had a room for three, but only one set of towels was there and the single bed hadn’t been made. It was all dealt with. After a long six-hour drive, we enjoyed staying in this original hotel with its many period features, while it still met Premier Inn standards. The food was good, and the huge beer garden gave the kids room to run around and let off steam. The staff really made the stay.

Even though it was late, there was still a room available. The rooms are reliably clean and fairly comfortable, and the staff make an effort to see that you have what you need. My only real difficulty was the stairs, going up and down to reach my first-floor room. The booking site wouldn’t accept my foreign postal code, so I had to book online while standing at reception.

Reception were great, as usual. My room was clean and tidy, with a big comfortable bed, but the hotel doesn’t look great from outside. It’s a fairly dated Premier Inn, with a TV barely bigger than an iPad and just one spare socket for charging my phone. The walls are thin and the floors creak, so it wasn’t as quiet as I expect from a Premium. Some rooms overlook the pub garden, and I’d worry they’d be noisy in summer. With no air con, you’d have to leave the window open.

We weren’t told there’d be a party at the venue, or we would have booked another hotel. The floodlights kept us awake until 11:30 pm, and room 26, though beautiful, is right above the restaurant doors. We could hear the doors banging all night and the toilet hand dryers below. It took over 45 minutes to check in because the system was down. My son was crying and wanted to sleep, but nobody offered to let us put him to bed and come back to sort the bill. The staff seemed unsure what to do without the computers. Breakfast was overcooked, and when we complained the staff just shrugged. I got a full refund. It’s a shame, because we’d stayed here before and had a lovely room, staff, and breakfast.

The attached restaurant was a shambles. Our starters and mains all arrived together, none of the outdoor chairs had seats, and I was bothered by so many wasps throughout the meal that I’m sure there’s an infestation. The hotel rooms are a reasonable size and the staff were helpful, like at any other Premier Inn, but the rooms need updating. Only some have double glazing. Breakfast was decent and up to normal Premier Inn standard. If you’re staying for work, I’d recommend McDonald’s instead. It’s nicer, cheaper, and faster.
