The Glenburn Hotel

The receptionist was very cheery, and the room itself was tidy and clean, though the mattress smelled of sour milk. The shower didn't work, so I had to use the bath. It's a great old building but feels stuck in the past, and some history about it would have been nice. The 10min walk to town is flat. Quirky in a weird way, and it reminded me of the shining. It was ok overall.

The view from the front of the hotel is spectacular, and the bed was very comfy. Service was friendly, breakfast was good, the room was warm and there was plenty of hot water. The public areas downstairs look good, but upstairs the corridors have worn carpets and the doors need repainting. The hotel is dated and currently being refurbished, with the very dated bathrooms, 1970s in our room, next on the list. It isn't easily accessible for people with mobility issues. There is limited parking for such a large hotel, and it's high up, so walking access means a steep side road or about 90 steps from the pavement. Be prepared for a cardio workout, and don't take the steps with luggage. It's big enough for bus tours but not good enough for a special occasion at the moment.

We've stayed here many times, and the location and staff are good, but our recent visit just for drinks and food was a big disappointment. We ordered a Margarita and an Old Fashioned at roughly a tenner each. Both were watery and tasted nothing like they should. When we raised the poor quality, the waitress said, "I know, everybody says the same". They use premade cocktails bought in bulk, without mentioning this on the menu or when you order. With a full bar there to make basic cocktails, that's not what you'd expect. They should at least say they're out a can.

The staff were incredibly kind and accommodating, and the atmosphere was lovely. But the meals cost a lot and were disappointing. The food seemed to have been frozen beforehand, and it was bland and quite tough. I'd recommend booking room only.
