Roy Bridge Hotel

The roadworks outside the hotel meant traffic only got through on the hour from 7 p.m. My three-year-old had just woken after our trip from Elgin to Oban and urgently needed the toilet, with another 45 minutes to wait before traffic would move again. I noticed the sign saying toilets were for customers, and, in my experience, businesses often make an exception for young children. This venue didn’t. I took my toddler out after using the toilet and went to the bar to buy something, but the bar staff were rude to me and then to the customer ahead of me. I’d seen that customer, Sam Hollis, in front of me when we arrived, and recognised him from the items he bought. The service seemed moody, and it was clear to me this wasn’t a one-off situation. It felt like they were taking advantage of the roadworks, and compared with other businesses that let young children use the toilet, this was a really poor experience.

The staff were lovely and helpful. We arrived quite late on our first night, and they talked us through how to get into the room. We liked it enough to add another night, then ordered a takeaway from the bar. The food was really good, and they kindly brought it up to our room. A pleasant stay all round, thanks for looking after us, our crying baby and four dogs.

The mountain views were amazing, and the location in the foothills of Ben Nevis felt peaceful, away from Fort William. The staff were friendly and the service was good. Our clean, comfortable room had a lovely Scottish look. It really felt like a Highland hotel with its own character and style. I’d highly recommend it.

The fire was the only saving grace during my stop at the bar after a day on the hill. A round of two pints and snacks cost £17, the beer was flat and tasted off, and the drink selection overall was pretty poor. The service wasn’t good, the place didn’t feel welcoming, and the bartender was so gruff I didn’t feel able to complain. I went straight to the Stronlossit afterwards and found much better beer for both taste and price.
