Today was the most fun I’ve had playing golf in ages. I’ve played Malkins Bank Golf Course at least 20 times before and always enjoyed it, but hadn’t been back for about four years. The website made clear there were new owners, and that they knew what a challenge it would be to bring this once-great course back to its best. The course is still great fun, with undulating ground, narrow spots, risk-and-reward shots, and some enjoyable holes. The fairways and greens need work, but I knew that from the website and thought £25 was a fair price for the round. A good greenkeeper will need at least 12-18 months to work their magic, but it should be worth it. The new-style clubhouse is superb, more modern and welcoming, with a solid range of food and drink. The driving range is closed for H&S reasons, which isn’t the current owners’ fault. Thank you.

A relaxed place to play, though rounds can be slow. It’s an interesting course, but some areas are prone to flooding and the greens can be in poor condition. £15 is great value, while £25 tee times don’t feel worth it given the state of the course.

The staff were really polite and friendly, and the meal was delicious. Thanks for accommodating our Waitrose works Christmas party. I’ll definitely be back to try your Sunday dinners, and I’d recommend the place.

Played on 19 August. The buggies were very nice, but that was the only real plus. The tees were worn, with little grass and a very uneven surface, and the fairways were much the same. The greens were terrible, with bare patches all over. Visitor prices have gone up this year, and at 3 out of 10, the value for money just isn't there. We won't be back and wouldn't recommend it.

I used to visit every week, but I don't want to go anymore. The location is good and close to home, though I’ve never stayed, so I can only guess the rooms are nice. The bar and restaurant service is where things go downhill. The same staff member seems to be working whenever I visit. She’s pleasant enough, but gets distracted even when there are only two other tables. She might start taking an order, bring one drink, then wander off to something or someone else, leaving us waiting and later asking what we wanted. Hot drinks can go cold while we wait. This week there were no saucers or biscuits with the coffee, and she served two other customers while serving us. I’m a barmaid, so I know the work can be like spinning plates when it’s busy, but I’ve never been there at a busy time and this happens every visit. You get food before cutlery, and she walks around looking busy without keeping on top of customers, used tables, or the bar. Customers understand bar etiquette and expect service in turn, rather than being left mid-order. A good barmaid can serve several people smoothly, but she can’t manage that. I’m very disappointed.
