Mayfield Hotel

We only stayed one night, but the room was comfortable and great value. Staff in the attached pub were friendly and helpful. We didn't eat, though the food looked good.

The Sunday carvery wasn't very good for the price, and breakfast was hit and miss depending on who was working. One day there were two pieces of toast, the next there were three. The coffee varied from a pot one morning to a very strong cup the next, and some items arrived cold while others were hot. The location was convenient, but there are plenty of other places nearby and I wouldn't stay again. Service was poor: several staff struggled to make eye contact or speak to us, and one ran off when we asked about checking in, saying, "I can't do that!" The room seemed to aim for a modern look that didn't suit the Yorkshire village setting. There was quite a bit of mould near the shower and the toilet seat was very uncomfortable. It felt more like a European city centre than a Yorkshire village. I wouldn't recommend it, especially at that price.

Mayfield Seamer has kind staff, a spotless setting and delicious food, so I'm very pleased with its service. The play area is a chance for both children and adults to have fun. I just don't understand why some families sit there if children's play and excitement bother them.

The meat was tender and juicy, and there was a great choice of fresh, hot, tasty trimmings. Even though it's self serve, the food was better than I expected, more like a plated gastro pub meal than the usual veg under a heat lamp. Friendly service and a lively atmosphere added to it. This may be the nicest carvery I've had. It's busy, so booking is a good idea even though walk ins are accepted. The price is very reasonable, and I'd definitely recommend it.
