The setting is stunning, and it’s perfect if you want to hike up Scafell Pike like I did. I’d also recommend walking up to Wast Water, it’s beautiful. I was lucky enough to catch an Open Mic night on Wednesday. Val, who runs it, was an absolute gem. The pub food was really good too. I had a gorgeous steak dinner and chatted with the farmer who reared the cows, a regular at the pub. The steak pie was delicious as well. The whole friendly team made my stay fab. Trish greeted me by name in the car park, and everyone was incredibly welcoming and helpful. The rooms were the one downside. I was comfortable enough, and the bedding and bathroom were clean, but the carpet was very dirty and stained, with debris on it as if it hadn’t been hoovered. I really didn’t want to tread on it. Take ear plugs too, as the walls are paper thin and you can hear other guests. That part can’t be helped in an old pub. I’d definitely stay again if the rooms get redone.

The locals were really welcoming and friendly. There’s a wide selection of spirits, plus interesting beers brewed on site alongside the usual commercial choices. Some lovely fresh flavours. I especially liked the 1492 pale (3.8%) and Premium Dark Mild (6%).

The rooms are nice and clean, with great water pressure, and the staff are friendly and accommodating. Breakfast is included in a great price, and the location is handy for hiking Scafell pike. I thought it was really sweet that the pub and locals hold charity events to raise money for emergency services. Couldn’t say a bad thing about this place.

The pub had good vibes, busy with both walkers and locals, and there was a good range of food and drinks to choose from. We had dinner after a long bike ride, enjoyed the friendly service and tried a few of their beers. Breakfast the next morning was very good too. Thanks, guys 😊

Fantastic service and a great hotel. They handled my special dietary needs perfectly. The rooms are very comfy, and even the Standard Rooms have King-size beds. I’ll definitely stay again!
