The rooms were comfortable, though a little old-fashioned. The Cross Keys has a cosy, traditional feel, with friendly staff, good food and a warm atmosphere. A pleasant classic inn stay.

Right by the Abbey and in the heart of Sherborne, this pub has a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. There’s a small outdoor seating area at the back, and it’s dog friendly too.

Chris made us feel welcome as soon as we came in, with no wait to be seated. He was cheerful and confident throughout, without being intrusive, and we all found it easy to chat and joke with him. A great waiter who clearly loves both his job and the pub. Thanks, Chris.

The waitress was lovely and very apologetic, but we were on a tight schedule and couldn’t wait for a replacement. I should have sent the chicken back: the marinated strips in my main were dry, stringy and chewy, which seemed hard to achieve after a marinade. My wife enjoyed her two starters, though my three breaded squid rings were a bit oily. We were the only early diners, and the wine was expensive. Chefs are hard to find and keep, but the French owner should eat there more often and check the quality of the food.

The rooms were gorgeous, spacious and clean, and parking was just a short walk away. It’s a fantastic, friendly, clean place in a lovely atmosphere, right by the Abbey.
