It was a last-minute booking on a nasty, rainy night after I left another place I’d booked because the bed was terrible. This room was quiet, clean, spacious and comfortable, and the people were lovely and helpful. It felt calm, just what I wanted. There’s no breakfast, but I picked up some things at the Co-op just around the corner. There was even a fridge in the room.

The rooms need refurbishing, and the mattress carried even the slightest movement from one person to the other, so we barely slept. Most rooms look over the car park, which was noisy during our stay, and the route to the rooms is dingy and worn. There seemed to be just one staff member, mainly working as a barmaid, and she was unreachable in the days before our visit. We only learned on the morning we arrived, too late to cancel, from another review that there was no food at all, not even breakfast. The pictures of great food on this Google page are years old, and the pub’s outside signs promising rooms, food and cask ales are a lie. This is NOT a 4-star hotel as the top of this Google page says. It’s very sad, as it seems to have been decent a couple of years ago, but the people who took it over appear to have let it slide. I advise avoiding it.

The bar is a great place to spend time, with friendly staff and locals, fresh beer and absolutely beautiful food. I stayed here for a few days for work. The rooms are a little dated and could use some TLC, but they’re comfortable and have everything you need to relax. I’d happily stay again.

The staff were pleasant and friendly, but this pub feels more aimed at drinkers than families. It badly needs cleaning and decorating. We took the grandchildren for a treat and ordered children’s meals. The sausage was okay overall, but the mashed potato wasn’t very tasty and seemed more like it was powdered.

After a long Dartmoor walk with two children, we stopped in for lunch and every plate was cleared. The food was outstanding, and the lady behind the bar was very friendly. We spent the rest of the day wishing we had a local pub like this. We’ll be back after our next walk.
