Set in a residential area beside a school, this Roman fort is surprisingly quiet for a free attraction. Most of what you see is the foundations, but there are reconstructions of the main gate, barracks and commanding officer’s house that give a much clearer sense of how the fort looked than drawings alone. The museum could do with more finds from other sites.

This is a great day out, with plenty of artefacts to see, and the staff are fantastic. The visitor's centre adds to the archaeology, while the recreated gate house and commanders building help bring the site to life. Since it's excavation, this place has become a real jewel of the north east and an invaluable part of our local history. Highly recommended.

You can wander around for an hour or so, it’s interesting for all ages and you might learn something along the way. Entry is free, but please donate or buy something to help keep it going. The staff are lovely too. I’d highly recommend a visit and will be back.

This is a lovely place for families, locals and tourists alike, with a small museum and informative signs for a self-guided walk around the site. The Romans reached as far north as South Shields, where they built a fort to house soldiers and set up a supply chain in an effort to defeat the Scots. That didn’t work out.

The centre has maps and signs that help tell the story, and entry is free, so Arbeia Roman Fort is well worth a visit. It’s fascinating to stand among something preserved for over 10,000 years and imagine life in the Stone Age. I’m still wondering how people managed to build walls that thick.
