The Grotto

We had a meal in the cafe/bar downstairs, and the bill came to £52 for two people, including two soft drinks. I ordered a chicken and pancetta club sandwich with a portion of chips, and the other order was naked fish. I was very disappointed.

After nearly 30 years, I finally made it back to the Grotto. My last visit was in 1997, when we only stopped for drinks, but the place, beach and restaurant stayed with me and made me want to return. This time we had the fish and chips, and they were marvellous. No complaints. The location speaks for itself, and it’s still a great place after all these years. I’m sure some things have changed, but it didn’t really feel that way. All good, and I hope to come back.

What an incredible little gem we stumbled across. Everything inside looks beautiful, as you can see in my video. I can picture having a romantic candlelit dinner here one day. It’s well worth a visit if you get the chance.

For £109, we got an overnight stay for two with breakfast, and the value was excellent. Having a room in a cave practically on the beach was such a special experience, and the building itself feels magical. The team really went out of their way to look after us. We ate at the restaurant too, with two courses each and two rounds of alcoholic drinks for under £100. The food was good, though the atmosphere might have been better with more people there. The room’s bath wasn’t clean, and neither was our restaurant table. With only four other tables dining, there wasn’t really an excuse for that, as other reviews have said about cleanliness. Breakfast was basic but more than enough for the price. I’d have liked a fresher option than pastry, maybe yoghurt or fruit. The experience is excellent for what it costs. Don’t expect the Ritz and you’ll be happy, just like we were :)
