Windsor house

I’ve been here for four days, and nobody has come to clean the room or replace the dirty towels with clean ones. The tea, coffee, and sugar haven’t been replenished either. We had a power cut, but that was fixed within 20 minutes. I’m not happy at all. It wasn’t worth what I paid for five nights.

We were at Windsor House, Stranraer for four nights from late February to early March 2025, in the King Room with garden view. What we got was disappointing. The garden could only be seen through the bathroom window, and was really rough ground enclosed by a falling-down wall, with two rough clotheslines stretched across the open area. There was no bathroom or toilet door to give privacy from the bed sitting room. The bathroom had no shampoo or soap, and there was no soap holder in the shower over the bath either. Access was from Lewis Street through a second-rate gate that offered no security, then down about 10 insecure steps to the unit. Cleaning was virtually nonexistent: the bed wasn’t made, the room wasn’t cleaned, and tea and milk weren’t replenished. The fire alarm appeared not to work. There was no on-site manager, even though the property is advertised as a guest house. Contact was by phone and the key came from a key locker. I’ve read other reviews and think they’re made up. One mentions being close to Morrissons Supermarket, which is a long way away. Lidl is the closest supermarket and is quite close by. I believe this property isn’t fit for purpose and Booking.com shouldn’t list it.

The location was convenient for the ferry port, and the bed was comfortable with fresh smelling bedding. Apart from that, I found the place shabby. The front door looked damaged and repaired, but hadn’t been repainted. Our room was beside it, facing the main street. There were no curtains or blinds in the bathroom. The windows were opaque, but my husband, who was outside after moving the car, could still clearly see me getting off the toilet. We hung bath towels over the windows for some privacy. There were two of us, but only one cup. The finish in the room was dreadful.

I only wanted somewhere cheap and clean for a couple of nights away, and wasn’t expecting much for the price. The room was clean, the bed and bedding were very comfortable, and the shower was spacious with both rainfall and handheld heads. I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised.
