The Royal Hotel Stromness

A good old-fashioned sort of pub, with good drinks and friendly service. The local barman had good banter. I'm local, and it's a great place to unwind after work and enjoy a wee dram and a bit of chat, even on a Monday.

I've stayed at the Royal twice, which probably says plenty. It's cosy and comfortable, with lovely wood throughout, and the location works well: an easy walk from the ferry and right on the high street. The staff are great, from booking and handling changes, which I needed, to suggesting things to do. For fine dining, book at the Kitchen at the Ferry Inn for a refined meal in a relaxed gastropub setting. If you're there on a summer Saturday, the Folk music evening in the Hudson lounge is fantastic.

The Royal is ideal for travelling around the island, and it's just across from the ferry. Reception and breakfast staff were very friendly and obliging. The bedrooms have been refurbished to a high standard, and breakfast was delicious. The full Scottish is well worth trying, with compliments to the chef.

Parking takes a bit of luck, which we had. The room was clean, large and comfortable, and there's a pub attached downstairs. The Royal is right on the high street. We had a good chat with the charming proprietor, who knows Orkney and local sailing well, along with plenty of other topics, including 90s era Jaguars and the music festivals that come through town.
