The rooms are fairly average, but the beds are super comfortable and the staff are fantastic. The team was the best part of the stay, especially the cleaning staff, who were very helpful. I gave the service three stars because of the breakfast, which is a management decision and not a reflection on the lovely staff. The area around the hotel feels run-down, and the boarded-up pub next door is an eyesore. There aren't many places to eat nearby apart from a Sainsbury's. I think the hotel may offer evening snacks, though we didn't try them. There is a gym directly across the street, which is handy. The familiar decor and color scheme made me wonder if it used to be a Premier Inn. Overall, it was a decent stay.
The price is very cheap, so I was more willing to accept a few shortcomings. People say it’s spotless, but I didn’t think it was. The old carpets had dust and fluff built up at the edges and in the corners, and the corridors and stairs felt grubby. I was uneasy letting the kids walk around barefoot. Breakfast was enough for the price, and the lovely staff make it behind reception.
I was in town for work and stayed the night. The room was clean and well kept, and breakfast was good value. Both the night and morning staff were easy to talk to, helpful, and happy to make a bit of small talk. I’ll use this hotel on every work trip up.
I stayed one night at magnum hotel in Sunderland on the 8th of Feb and parked my vehicle outside. I gave my registration number at reception, but still got a parking charge notice from UKPC, the car park regulator. I’ve emailed them and got a reply that sounded promising, but nothing was followed up. I’ve called reception more than 20 times. They answered once, then forwarded me to “RECEPTION,” which was where I already was on the phone. It felt like they were fobbing me off. Even on the night of my stay, I called for directions and got no answer. Their customer service is as bad as it gets. DO NOT STAY HERE IF YOU WISH TO BE CHARGED BY THEIR CAR PARK REGULATOR. It’s abysmal.
The stadium is very close, so I’d stay here again if I’m visiting it. Lindsey went way beyond what she had to do after I fell. She carried me to her car, drove me to the hospital, checked on me and my child afterwards, and arranged for my car to stay in the car park because I couldn’t drive it home. She deserves a raise and a bonus. I can’t thank her enough. Chris was also unbelievably helpful and pleasant, even though I changed my booking several times. The hotel may not be five-star, but the service we got certainly was.
