We booked because we specifically wanted to stay in a pub, relax in the bar and have a pint of Jail Ale. The website I used to book didn’t make it clear that it’s no longer open as a pub. The menu is now very limited and no good for vegetarians, who still fries their chips in beef, for goodness’ sake? Now they’re trying to charge me to cancel the booking. Not a good experience.

The decor is warm and enjoyable, and it feels like a nice country pub. Staff were lovely and friendly, though one of the orders for our table of seven was missed, and they apologised. Food was nice but fairly average for an above average price, with mains around £15-18, though that isn’t the whole menu.

We ate outside in the lovely garden on a glorious summer day, before setting off for a walk. Two families met up for lunch, and the food was good, the service excellent and the venue superb. I can’t really comment on the inside of the pub, but the bar area looked pleasant and quite traditional.

My son and I have stayed at The Elephants Nest every year we’ve visited Devon for the last six years. It’s a charming, cozy, welcoming place, and wonderful to stay at. Hugh and his wife Denise are so kind and accommodating, the sort of hosts you couldn’t ask to improve on. Denise’s food is amazing, easily good enough for a Michelin starred kitchen. We eat breakfast and dinner at the Elephants Nest every day, there’s no point going anywhere else. I even asked Denise to dump Hugh and come live with me in America. She said no, I was too old for her! We’ll be back next year, God willing!

Both owners were approachable and very helpful, despite my apprehension after reading earlier reviews about a “ Grump Landlord “. I’d certainly recommend staying, and we’re already trying to arrange another visit. We had the ground floor room with a patio, and it was big, clean, tidy, and had everything else you need. Breakfasts were absolutely magnificent, some of the finest food I can remember. We didn’t eat there in the evening, which was a shame, as another guest staying in one of the other rooms told us how good it was. We’ve just returned from a long weekend at The Elephant Inn. It isn’t operating as a pub at the moment, but that only added to the experience, as we could use the wonderful gardens and enjoy the magnificent views.
