The Inn at Hawnby

After long walks over the hills, our cosy, comfortable room was just what we needed. Our dog was warmly welcomed too, which makes travelling so much easier. The staff were kind and attentive without being overbearing, made the stay feel personal, and had good tips for the local area. The food and wine were excellent, with plenty of choice and thoughtful dishes. The flavours and ingredients were great, without anything feeling fussy. With the scenery, evenings by the fireplace, and relaxed but attentive atmosphere, The Owl at Hawnby has become a favourite straight away. We’ll definitely return.

The views are perfect on a clear day, from the tables over the village and the valleys to the east. Hawnby is a beautiful little village, and this pub fits right in. I’ve been many times for food and a pint, though I haven’t stayed overnight yet. Both have been superb, with great beer and an excellent choice and quality of food. One of my favourite pubs.

I can’t comment on the hotel since we only came for food and drinks, but the prices really aren’t justified. My shortrib burger was a huge disappointment. The meat was tough and had little flavour, and all I could really taste was the ketchup and mustard. I couldn’t taste the bone marrow or cheese either. The bottom of the bun was soaked through, making it unpleasant and hard to eat. The fries were basic, unseasoned oven chips that could have come straight from a packet. £22 for that is daylight robbery.

The terrace is lovely on a sunny summer day. We had a really nice dinner there for my birthday, with excellent food and wine. The chef was very accommodating about my wife’s allergies.
