White Rose Country Cottages

Thirsk and the surrounding area are beautiful, with plenty to see and do. It was a shame the accommodation didn’t live up to that. The chalet-style terraced cottages are in a pleasant spot, with parking outside each one, though you have to drive through the pub car park to get there. The kitchen and lounge looked clean and were comfortable, if quite dated. The bathroom was the real problem. There was a very unpleasant smell, which we thought might be from the plastic shower curtain around the bath. The shower runs from the bath taps and was hard to adjust, swinging between scalding and freezing. The grout behind it was orange. The toilet leaned towards the bath, was stained inside, and had a very dusty base that looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for months. It didn’t meet Covid 19 standards. The bathroom needed gutting. Why bother, if you can keep letting cottage No 5 as it is?

After a four-hour drive, we were told they couldn’t find our booking. It took until 9-10 for them to sort it out, then they said they couldn’t accommodate us. They apologised and promised a full refund. Once we’d left the property, though, their attitude changed and they became defensive. Now they won’t reply to us. It’s been over a month, and there’s still no refund or any contact. SCAM! Avoid at all costs.

We had a lovely holiday and would come back. We brought our daughter, who was almost one, and were relieved after reading the reviews afterward. We usually check reviews before booking, and if I’d seen those complaints first, I wouldn’t have booked. For us, it wasn’t dirty. It’s no five-star palace, but for what we paid it was perfect, cosy, and had everything we needed. The cottages are around the back of a pub car park, but that didn’t bother us at all. There are plenty of nearby towns for shopping and days out. Bring food, though, as the takeaway is very small. For value, I’d give it five out of five.

We barely stayed indoors because there wasn’t much to keep us there apart from a Jacuzzi and TV. The cottage we got was really poor quality. The bed linen, towels and kitchen utensils were all poor, and the rooms were badly furnished. The floors cracked when you walked, and even the neighbour next door could hear us talking or watching TV at night. There were so many problems that I wouldn’t recommend staying here, even for one night. There’s nowhere nearby for shops, restaurants or fish and chips either.
