Crown Lodge

Breakfast was amazing, with massive portions, and the owners were very friendly. Our room had lots of useful features, including an iron and board, kettle, toiletries and lovely decor. We could get in late at night without disturbing the owners, and had plenty of privacy. We couldn’t speak more highly of the stay and hope to visit again.

The room was fairly small compared with the others, but for the price we couldn’t complain. It was clean and the bed was very comfortable. Anna, the owner, and the other lady looked after us wonderfully, and the lady serving breakfast was lovely too. Breakfast was beautiful. The owners also offered advice on what to see, which was helpful since it was our first stay in Torquay. Very lovely people.

The way the staff treated us was the worst part of a stay that ruined three days of our holiday. I’ve never experienced such rudeness and greediness. When I asked for a large coffee after a sleepless night, I was given a lecture about what coffee I should be happy with, namely the tiny espresso I’d been given. She told me to make instant coffee in the room if I wanted more. Was I supposed to leave my family at breakfast and go prepare coffee there? They were extremely rude about everything we asked for. We were told we could have one croissant each from the buffet, and staff stood watching us. One was so dry it seemed to be from the day before or earlier, but when we tried to swap it, we were told off. They refused our son two eggs. The only thing that wasn’t counted was bread, which we don’t eat, so we were still hungry. After waiting 40 minutes for our food, we took one piece of fruit each and had to rush out. A woman chased us to the stairs, shouting that we had to eat it in the breakfast room, not on the way out. I was shocked. On top of that, there was no WiFi or reception in our room, so we were completely disconnected. There were no COVID measures, and people sat very close together in a crowded breakfast room. We’d been assured in advance that the extra bed was a proper bed, but it was actually a tiny, uncomfortable fold-up one. The house is by the road, and the noise kept us awake. We could have put up with all of that, but the way we were treated was beyond belief. What kind of management is this? Greedy, shameless people. I’m sorry we had to experience this on our family holiday.

This was our third stay with Claire and David, but our first time bringing our daughter and granddaughter. They loved it as much as we do. We had rooms 1 and 2 for the weekend, and as always, everything was spotlessly clean and the food was superb. Claire and David are superb hosts and nothing is ever too much trouble.
