The upstairs rooms are the weak point. Most haven't been refurbished, and some may pick up an unpleasant noise from the kitchen below. Still, I would recommend the hotel to anyone who doesn't mind a less modern, less globalised style. Its setting above Babbacombe Beach is privileged, and it has a long history of style and splendour. Downstairs is still fabulous. The dining room feels like a movie set, and breakfast there is an experience: the waiters work in a clear hierarchy, the jam comes in bowls, and the room looks out over a lovely park while a pianist entertains guests.

The billionaire owner and developer wants to knock down the old hotel and replace it with an exclusive five-star hotel, with scenic views for guests paying over £100 a night, plus up to 40 family homes beside 'ANSTY'S COVE'. To me, that would ruin a naturally scenic cove that's 400 million years old. The whole complex could bring up to 4,000 people a day, including staff, guests and householders with children and dogs, along with utility vehicles, more sewage and rubbish, and a need for extra policing. Where would the five-star hotel and very quiet golf course go, as the 'Queen Mother' might have asked? There are poor, starving people in Asia and homeless, poverty-stricken people in Torquay. 'THE PALACE HOTEL'... 'HUMBUGS'... I also wonder what happened to the old portrait of the regal 'QUEEN MOTHER' that used to be the centrepiece of the downstairs 'lounge' wall.
