The room itself was a letdown from the start: it smelled of smoke, the rubbish bin hadn’t been emptied, and the mattress had a deep dip in the middle. There was mould on the shower curtain and around the bath, and the taps were caked in dirt and grime. The corridor also smelled damp and musty. We’d booked two nights, but after what we found, I wished we’d listened to the reviews and stayed away. We had a child with us, and guests were drinking and play-fighting outside. Another guest was smoking weed right outside, so we couldn’t keep the windows open for long. When we checked in, the receptionists seemed curt and like they couldn’t be bothered. We complained and said we wouldn’t stay. The response was that we’d only been there two hours and that the bathroom mould was acceptable. I got so angry that I left with my family. Be warned, this seems more suited to contractors on work trips than families. I’ll take it up with the booking site we used. If I could leave no stars with just a review, I would.

My husband and I arrived at Happy Lodge at 8:30 PM on 14th February, right on time for our booking, only to be told there was no room for us. Nobody had called, messaged or emailed to let us know. We found out only once we got there. Trying to sort it out, we were met with abusive talk from the manager, who refused to help and left us stranded late at night. It was an extremely stressful experience. The communication, professionalism and basic customer service were unacceptable.

Was welcomed me at reception when I arrived, and he was so helpful and polite. He deserves a promotion. That kind of welcome has me coming back again and again. I booked a night at Happy Guest Lodge recently and was really pleased with how it turned out. The hotel was clean and tidy, and I’d strongly recommend it to anyone staying in the area.

Absolutely horrific. I don't have enough words for how bad it was. There was a rag stuffed behind the toilet to soak up a leak, the bath was held together with black duct tape, and the food hygiene score displayed was false. The door was smashed too. I think the receptionist stole my booking.com pin. Maybe that's how they get false reviews. This place needs to be shut down. I’ll tell the council they’re showing the wrong food hygiene level on the door.

I can’t get over being given a bed that was literally covered in what seemed like fresh urine. We first told staff the room smelled of urine when we arrived, but they didn’t move us and just gave us air freshener. The smell got worse overnight. In the morning, it was clear it was coming from under the mattress, and the bed was covered in urine. Photos attached. I went to find a staff member to report it, but nobody was at the desk and no one answered the doorbell. The person I initially complained to had already admitted they knew the room smelled foul, yet they still gave it to us. There were other problems too, including a mouldy shower curtain and a toilet coming out of the floor, but those pale beside the urine. I stayed here on 15th July. I’m not someone who usually complains or leaves bad reviews, but selling someone a room for one night with a bed like that is disgraceful. Recalling it makes me feel ill. I’ve stayed in some shockers, but never had anything close to this. Something like this seems grounds for a hotel to be shut down, at least temporarily. Please don’t stay here. You’d be better off in your car.
