Park House Guest House

The location is good, and that’s about the only plus. The rooms were dirty, with carpets that were absolutely filthy and clearly hadn’t been hoovered in weeks, maybe months. There were mould spots on the walls, and the bedding was questionable. The owner was incredibly abrupt about being paid as soon as we arrived, before we’d even seen the room. I might not have stayed if I hadn’t already handed over the cash, which apparently must be paid in cash. It’s not a B&B, since no breakfast is offered. In our room, the shower was at the foot of the double bed behind a clear door, so there was no privacy at all. At least the toilet had a door.

A delightful older couple run this place. It’s not modern, but it has a lot of charm, and the hot showers were great value. I was happy to find extra duvets and pillows in the wardrobe since I like plenty of blankets, and it was nice to feel cosy. The location is brilliant, just a short walk from the town centre and station.

The location and room price were the only good things, with St nicks park nearby and the town about 10 minutes away. The rooms felt really claustrophobic, and finding hair in the shower didn’t help. It was in the middle of the room, which felt unhygienic and uncomfortable, with no privacy. The wallpaper was coming away from the wall, as if it was damp or had had a leak nearby.

The accommodation was fine for an overnight stop on a long journey, and I was very happy with it, hence the 5 stars. The owner was a lovely chap, and neither of the surprises I ran into was his fault. The room has to be paid for in cash on arrival, which I missed in the Booking.com message. Also, there’s no breakfast. Google’s fault here: G-Maps wrongly categorises the guest house as a B&B and says breakfast is available. The owner hasn’t served breakfast in over 2 years. Booking.com has the correct details, and I should have spotted the mismatch. Come on, Google, why is it taking more than 2 years to update this listing?
