YHA Boggle Hole - Hostel

Just got back from YHA Boggle Hole Hostel and loved it. Tucked into a little cove, away from roads and crowds, it’s wonderfully peaceful. The staff were friendly and helpful, and I had food by the fireplace for a really cosy evening. The room was comfortable and good for the price. The walls were a bit thin, though, and I could hear people walking to and from the toilet. Apart from that, everything was lovely and I’d definitely return.

This hostel’s location is close to perfect, which may explain the prices. We got the room for £30 a night on offer, and that seemed fair for what it was. On some nights it’s listed at £150, though, and given what the rooms provide, that’s a scandalous price. We were assigned the “crows nest”, an ugly purpose-built building outside the main one, up a pretty steep flight of stairs. That was frustrating since we’d told the hostel when booking that we had a baby. There was no toilet paper in the room, so we used the communal toilet rather than make the five-minute round trip to reception. There was no shower gel either, and the room had very little space, plastic mattresses and poor lighting. Showering soaked the whole bathroom floor, and without a floor towel the main room got a little wet too. The rooms are functional, but that’s about it. For £30 it was fine. At £150 a night, I’d have been absolutely furious.

We stopped in for coffee and cake after walking from Robin Hood bay along the Cleveland way. The cafe/bar was cosy, the service super friendly, the coffee very good and the cake excellent. We walked back along the beach, just missing the tide and wading through a foot or two of water. Our dog was delighted to stay off lead a little longer. A lovely find.

We didn’t stay, but found this lovely cove after driving a two-mile narrow lane. From there, it’s a short walk to RHB over the path through the woods, or around the headland at low tide. There are toilets, meals and other amenities. Getting down from the free car park is steep, but well worth the walk. We’d go again.
