The animals around the site were such a lovely extra, and Hay on Wye is a great place to explore, with interesting spots, wild swimming and some good places to eat. We stayed in Mother Earth, which had everything we needed for a calm, relaxing break. Daphne kindly set up a double and a full-size single for us; the other single beds were a little shorter. They were all very comfortable, and she was a wonderful host. The barrel tub had lovely hot water, and eco products were provided for washing. We hope to come back.

Daphne was so welcoming and helpful, and we came away feeling completely at peace. Our stay at the New Inn was magical, and the wagon felt wonderfully private, tucked among nature. We especially loved having the outdoor kitchen and bath. We’ll definitely be back :) x

The bedroom views were remarkable, and breakfast was served whenever suited us. Our dogs were welcome, though we didn’t bring them. That was probably for the best, since the stairs aren’t really suitable for larger dogs or very old ones, and we have one of each. The house was lovely, full of interesting things Daphne has collected over the years. She’s an interesting person too. We had no complaints.

The location was great for hiking, wild swimming and canoeing, and Hay-on-wye is only a short distance away and well worth visiting. We stayed four nights in the 'bird cage' with our cat, and the enclosed space meant we could relax without worrying about her escaping or getting lost. A path edged with celandine and forget-me-nots led down to our little sanctuary. We spent a wonderfully laid-back few days, soaking in the hot tub at sunset and watching bats appear at dusk, then sitting around the fire listening to nature. We also walked among the spring wild flowers. We grilled lamb chops and Welsh dragon sausages from the local farm shop on the BBQ, and enjoyed Daphne's ducks eggs too. Leaving on our last day felt a bit sad as we headed back up the Forget-me-not path.

The quiet atmosphere helped us forget the rat race for a while, and the views across the Valley to the Black Mountains were majestic. Thanks to Daphne and Kala for a wonderful stay in the Hutty. The location felt magical and nicely tucked away, and the Hutty itself was gorgeous, with the care put into it clear in all the little touches. Back to reality now, but we can’t wait to return. Highly recommended.
