The central location and the large, fluffy white towels were the only good parts of this B&B. The room was tired and needed redecorating, and getting to it meant climbing a very steep staircase. We arrived after 5pm following a long day of travel. The gentleman who greeted us didn't introduce himself and said he was surprised to see two of us, since the booking showed one adult. I'd booked a double room, and there'd been no mention of single occupancy. Check your booking carefully: we had to pay another £60 straight away on top of the £220 already paid. Before we'd barely stepped inside, he asked what we wanted for breakfast the next morning. Who knows that the day before? The last breakfast sitting was at 8.30am, and the meal was awful. It was a basic sausage, bacon, and egg breakfast, so dry it looked as if it had been cooked the night before. I'm not sure where the four and a half stars come from. It certainly wasn't an AA or other formal rating, as there was no plaque on display. I wouldn't recommend it.

We had a superb breakfast and a lovely room at The Rutland, and can't wait to visit Windsor again and book another stay. This beautiful little B&B was spotless, with lovely owners and fabulous attention to detail. I especially liked the Royal Albert bone China cups and saucers in both the room and breakfast room.

Windsor town and the castle are an easy, short walk away. The bed was so, so soft that we literally sank into it, and I woke with pins and needles running down my arm. The sheets didn't feel fresh, and the polyester duvet cover wasn't nice at all.

The staff were great and couldn't do enough to help, from local information to recommendations. The place was cosy, comfortable, and clean, and the location is good, about a 10-minute walk to Windsor shopping and bars. I'd recommend staying here. A couple of things brought it down to four stars. I'd have preferred a proper duvet instead of just a sheet and blanket. There's no thermostat in the room, so it can get chilly if the heating takes too long to come on. The fried breakfast was nice, but the hash brown was undercooked. If you're driving, book a parking space ahead: it's first come, first served, and nearby parking can be hard to find if you miss out.

The owners were chatty and friendly, and served a very good English breakfast with plenty of cereals and fresh fruit. The rooms were smart, clean, and warm, and the location is great.
