The Granary Hotel

The wedding itself ran smoothly, and everyone who came had a fantastic time. Katie and Abby deserve a huge thank you for all their hard work and organisation. The waiters and bar staff were friendly and helpful too. There are plenty of lovely memories from the day, though the rooms and breakfast were a letdown. The groom's party got ready in an unused hotel room, which still should have been in better condition. There was lipstick on the wall, floor and toilet paper, and the toilet seat was completely broken. Guests staying at the hotel felt the experience didn't match the price. Several found their rooms cold despite the small radiators. The air con units in the breakfast area were broken, and it was so cold you could see your breath. More radiators were brought in, but the lights went out, so breakfast was eaten in the dark. Ruby, the breakfast waitress, did her best in difficult circumstances and went above and beyond to make people comfortable. Khalid took some money off the bill, but it wasn't a great way to end the wedding.

The Christmas lunch we had yesterday at 1:30 was lovely, and the food was cooked very well. It was a very cold day, though, and I think the toilets should have had the heating on. I asked the waitress for some tin foil so I could take a couple of slices of turkey home for my dog. She was very rude and said I wasn't allowed. I was annoyed because I'd paid for it, and when I said so, she told me to hurry up so she could take the plate. My friend rightly complained to the manager. At £95 per head, being treated that way was frustrating. Management should train staff to be polite and customer friendly.

Friendly, helpful staff and decent quality food with good sized portions. It's a nice little family run hotel in a lovely rural setting, with good access to the main routes. The rooms are clean and modern, nicely finished, and all on one level in a separate annexe. All in all, not too bad.

My daughter chose this hotel for her wedding because she wanted an all in package. Things seemed fine until the month before, when they said her account was £7,000 short and demanded the balance. She explained she'd paid months earlier into the account THEY had emailed her. A few hours later they admitted the hotel email had been hacked and that my daughter's and another bride's details had been compromised. The bank said our claim would take 15 working days, which meant the answer would come a day after the wedding. We met one of the owners to discuss it, but the hotel took NO responsibility and still demanded payment within seven days, refusing an extension even though their email was hacked. The family found the money so the wedding could go ahead. The day itself brought more problems. Bar staff couldn't pour a pint, and several guests ended up going behind the bar to do it. Reception staff were rude to guests checking into rooms; once inside, guests found them dirty, with some broken furnishings. One toilet had a broken flush button covered with tape. When we raised this, one owner became extremely rude and arrogant, called a guest a lier, and threatened to call the police. The three course meal took over three hours to serve. Starters took 40 minutes, then mains took another 45. Some guests had to leave before dessert for other commitments. When we asked about the delay, a staff member responded sarcastically. Dessert eventually came, but it was the wrong one, and by then we just accepted it. Afterwards, when my son went to the bar for a drink, a staff member offered him drugs and asked him not to tell the manager when he refused. We did tell them. Katie, the wedding arranger, did her best. The owner we dealt with was arrogant and delusional, and definitely in the wrong profession. Weddings are hopefully once in a lifetime. Please don't trust this hotel with your special day.
