Grange Lodge

The room was clean and comfortable, and only a ten-minute walk from the centre. There’s no lift, but the price was excellent value. Most of the staff were kind and welcoming. We arrived before our 2pm check-in and called ahead. I paid the hotel £5 to store our luggage and said I’d come back later. They assured me the bags would be taken to our room when it was ready, but when we returned in the afternoon, they were still in the lobby. I calmly picked them up myself, and an older woman from the neighbouring Bootham Guest House came over and shouted aggressively at me and my partner. She said we should have called her rather than collecting our own belongings, despite what the hotel had promised, and kept berating us even after we apologised. When I asked whether we should take the bags back to the lobby, she said, “You can leave now! I can cancel your room!” It was deeply upsetting. We felt treated like prisoners, not guests. I’d gladly give the hotel and its other lovely staff five stars, but this woman’s behaviour means taking off two stars.

The location was really good, about ten minutes from the city centre but still in a quiet area, and parking was available for £5 a day. The Wi-Fi was decent, and tea and coffee facilities were provided. The room and bathroom were clean, but the room was as small as it could be. The rooms weren’t well insulated, so noise carried and you could hear other guests.

A fantastic place to stay, with a clean, spacious room. Great location for York city centre and the attractions. I’d definitely stay again.

Room service really stood out, always prompt and thoughtful, and delivered with genuine warmth. I had a lovely stay at The Grange Lodge in York. It’s tucked away in a peaceful spot, yet just a short walk from the heart of the city, making it an ideal base for exploring York’s historic streets. A nice balance of comfort and convenience, and I’d be very happy to return.
