Hampton by Hilton York Piccadilly

The staff made this stay feel especially safe. I was travelling alone as a cancer patient and got quite sick, and I didn’t know what to do because I’d never had that kind of emergency in the US. Charlotte called 999, while Tom brought me water and an electrolyte drink, then called a taxi. When I came back that evening, Charlotte brought more bottles of water and toiletries to my room. They and other staff kept checking on me for the rest of my stay and reminded me that the desk was open 24/7 if I needed anything. I’ve never felt safer or more secure at a hotel. This was my second visit to the Hampton by Hilton in York, and I came back because it really is a dream hotel for the area. The rooms are large and comfortable, with soft beds and seating areas. It’s very convenient for seeing the sights, and the included breakfast is nice. Special thanks to Charlotte and Tom for helping me through a crisis.

The breakfast was good, with decent food and a reasonable variety, though my eldest son was disappointed they had only scrambled eggs. The dining room coffee machines had no English Breakfast tea for quite a while, maybe 30 minutes, until someone refilled them. I’d mentioned it at reception, but the girl said the dining room staff would handle it and didn’t alert anyone, which seems to explain the delay. We had construction views, but kept the curtain shut for privacy. The location is excellent for walking into the old town, though there was a fair bit of noise from people passing by fairly late on Friday and Saturday nights on floor 1, plus a little noise from other guests. The stay was comfortable and good value. The queen beds were oddly low and took getting used to, but were reasonably comfortable. Two pillows each was nice. I also liked the bar fridge, kettle, hairdryer, big TVs, useful coat hooks, and adjoining door between our two rooms. A few things could be improved. Teaspoons and extra blankets would have been handy, and a welcome note saying you can get them from reception would have helped. I was a bit cold and couldn’t work out the heating and cooling system. Our shower gel dispenser stayed empty throughout the stay, even after I took it off the wall and left it on the vanity to alert housekeeping. The glasses weren’t clean when we arrived. The shower did the job, but its small head and open half made it hard to get properly warm, and I had to be careful not to spray water out. There was also an unpleasant high-pitched noise from the power point or something by the bedhead.

We really enjoyed staying here and will definitely come back. The room was spotless, beautifully decorated in a modern style, and had a nice view. The bed was comfy and we had all the amenities we might need. The hotel staff were great, and the location is central.

We had a wonderful stay and will definitely return. Our twin room was ready, so the welcoming staff checked us in early. It was stylish and immaculately clean, and breakfast was sumptuous with something for every taste. Thank you to the hotel team.
