The Green Ranch was a welcome escape from the busy pace of Kumasi. The ride there is long and bumpy, but the views, atmosphere, and the care Elodie and her team put into the place make it worthwhile. I felt at home as soon as I arrived, and my room was clean and nicely presented. The terrace is relaxing, with plenty of chances to spot local wildlife, and I rode out with Elodie twice, a real treat for seeing the surroundings on horseback. The home-cooked local vegetarian food is relaxed and tasty, with spectacular views across the lake. Highly recommend.

The lake view from the terrace is beautiful, and it’s a nice place to relax. The mother, who owns the accommodation, was friendly and speaks french. One night was expensive, though the horse keeping may help explain the cost, while meal prices were similar to other hostels. I also need to share a serious concern. Her 14-year-old son touched my breast and butt inappropriately when I was alone with him. He seemed to understand he could get in trouble and asked me not to tell my friends. It ruined the stay, and I wanted to leave as soon as possible. His mother had told us the day before that a man from the village had touched her inappropriately, and then her son did the same to me. I felt I had to tell her what happened. Before we left, I did, and she said she needed to talk to him and told me he has a disability. As a woman, I’d be very cautious here.

The Green Ranch is a beautiful spot at Lake Bosomtwe, almost like somewhere in Italy. Harmatan dust limited the view during my visit, though it may be clearer outside the dry season. The dorms are much like other dorms, but the cabin wall is thin wood, so sound carries through. Tap water is drinkable, and I really enjoyed the food. There’s a different delicious vegetarian stew each day. Horseback riding and kayak rental are fun options. Getting there took a bit of planning: I took a trotro from Kumasi High school junction to Kuntanse for 7 ghs, then a shared taxi to Abono at Lake Bosomtwe for 10 cedi. From Abono, it was a half-hour walk on a bumpy sand road, so avoid that with more than a backpack. A taxi from Kuntanse to the Green Ranch costs 150 ghs. You can also take a taxi or motorcycle from Abono, but I don’t know the fare. I recommend the place.

We stayed two nights and paid 860ghc for the en suite room, cash only. It’s a budget to mid range choice depending on which room you pick, at a lovely family business. Our large room had a huge, very comfortable bed and a ceiling fan, with plugs on one side of the bed and across the room. The en suite was a good size, separated from the room by a curtain, with soap provided and a cold water shower. Staff were great, but there was no housekeeping during our stay. Breakfast wasn’t included. There was no WiFi, though we could ask to use a connection briefly. Horse riding is available with advance booking. The surprise was the noise. I didn’t expect to be disturbed here, but Friday night into Saturday morning there was what sounded like a rave. It turned out to be a funeral, and I guess the lake magnifies the music, so it’s something to keep in mind for a weekend visit.

Getting there is a little tricky, and the road isn’t great, but the lake view makes it worthwhile. It’s a lovely lodge, and Elodie is warm and welcoming. There’s one home-cooked meal each day, and it’s delicious. Definitely recommend.
