We paid €100 a night and came away feeling the place was a scam: two eggs were the only decent part of a stay in a damp room that felt like it was on a landfill. The fried eggs were made by the same elderly woman who handled our check-in. Breakfast otherwise was bleak, with a few slices of bread, stale cookies, one kind of cheese, some fruit, and watery drip coffee. The espresso machine sat unused without beans or water until we asked; then she turned it on and found milk. In daylight the “resort” looked like an abandoned ghost hotel, depressing and eerie, with litter and debris everywhere. There were broken loungers, wrecked umbrellas, a murky pool with a rusty ladder, and rubbish left in corners. The infinity pool faced a “private beach” strewn with plastic waste and crumbling verandas, a beautiful setting spoiled by neglect and mismanagement. We should have taken the first warning sign seriously: they couldn’t provide a shuttle from the port on the other side of the island. We thought it might just be the end of the season and made our own way there. At reception, the room was dark and cluttered with boxes and dead plants. An elderly, disheveled woman who spoke only Greek mumbled and couldn’t answer our questions, then led us to a musty room that seemed unused for weeks. She fumbled to get the electricity on. Check-in was confusing and unwelcoming; when we tried to shower, there was no hot water. We went to bed exhausted, hoping the next day would be better. It wasn’t. Avoid this place at all costs.

We paid nearly €500, and this was far worse than other island hotels we’d stayed at for less, with much better service and facilities. Calling this a 3-star property is seriously misleading. The experience was stressful and disappointing, and I’d avoid it. At Aqua Petra Hotel, the pool was broken, the loungers and parasols were damaged, and the supposed “private beach” was full of rubbish and debris. The whole property felt neglected and abandoned. Our room smelled musty and seemed as though it hadn’t been maintained in years. The dark, cluttered lobby and reception were unwelcoming, with boxes everywhere. There was basically one staff member doing everything, and she spoke no English, so communication was impossible. A young woman showed up at reception occasionally but wasn’t helpful. Breakfast was meagre and unappetizing: a couple of dry croissants, some fruit, stale bread, and hardly any coffee. We often had to ask for water or milk. The kitchen and dining area were dark and nothing like the online photos. Other guests were also shocked and disappointed, talking openly about how strange and uncared for the hotel felt. Many seemed sad and confused, wondering how it could be called a “resort” with practically no staff and just one woman who spoke no English.

The staff were very friendly, the location is great, and the hotel has a nice large pool. The pool bar is reasonably priced, and breakfast has the essentials and is convenient. We did have a small hot-water problem: it took a while to come through, so I had to start my shower with cold water.

The taverna on site served great food and lovely local wines, and the staff there were friendly. We spent three honeymoon nights here in August and couldn’t be happier with our choice. Spyros gave us a very warm welcome, and all the staff were super friendly. Our corner room was clean, quiet, and peaceful, with fantastic views across the sea and mountains. There are amazing beaches right below the hotel, and boat trips run every half hour to and from the nearby uninhabited island. Highly recommend!

We had four perfect nights here, and this was our favourite place in all of Greece. The family who run Aquapetra Hotel were unbelievably hospitable, the rooms were spacious and very comfortable, and the setting felt like the Greek islands must have been 50 years ago, peaceful and picturesque. I recommend renting a car. It’s only a short but steep drive to two towns, and you can make a game of counting the mountain goats! Amorgos and Aquapetra Hotel won’t suit you if you’re after nightlife, crowded beaches, luxury shopping, tour buses, or cruise ships. Come for deep peace, spectacular views, and a chance to really unwind.
