We’ve stayed at this hotel for a couple of years, so it was a shock to arrive from Chania and be told there was no room for us, despite having booked directly and received two confirmation emails. We even showed him the emails he’d sent. Luckily, the hotel up the road took us in and was much friendlier.

Hotel Sofia is in a great spot, and the entrance area is beautifully arranged. Our room was ready when we arrived, with a comfortable bed and a porch looking out at greenery and the caves. The owners were lovely and easy to reach both before check-in through chat and after we got there. They also arranged a taxi from Heraklion airport, and the driver was very kind.

Everything in Matala is within walking distance from this perfectly located place. The staff were helpful, and the basic rooms were clean and had air conditioning. Good value for the money.
