Douskos Guesthouse

The staff were genuinely helpful, and the location made arriving easy. We could walk from the ferry with our suitcases, and there's a grocery store right next door. The town is built into the hillside, though, so expect stairs and make sure you're comfortable getting around on foot. Our room was spacious, with high ceilings, strong AC, a sink, a Nespresso machine, and a large mini fridge with a freezer. The bed was a bit too hard for me, but the pillows were nice. Breakfast is served on the rooftop at the sister hotel by the water. It was made to order, included, and much better than I expected.

Our double room had a balcony, but the arrival was a rough start. No one was there to show us to the room, and after we called the number posted there, it took 15 minutes for someone to come, despite being told they'd arrive in two. The toilet seat was loose and kept moving. The AC didn't work well, and since the days were cold, there was no way to warm the room. I wouldn't recommend this guest house for a visit to the island.

The hosts were kind and helpful, and the rooms had an unusual, interesting feel. The location was just off the main path, and breakfast was down the street at a rooftop garden cafe with great service and incredible views. Getting up there meant climbing steep stairs. There were several drawbacks in our room: a machine outside the window started up every few minutes, and the church bell rang on the hour. Room service didn't bring fresh towels. The bathroom floor got extremely slippery when wet, and the stairs were steep with a low ceiling my husband couldn't clear comfortably. The bed was small and very firm. I didn't sleep well, but I think I'd stay again.

The room was great, and the staff were friendly and helpful with dinner reservations and suggestions. We were right by the harbor. Breakfast is nearby, but getting there involves a large flight of stairs, which could be difficult if you have mobility issues. I'd still recommend the hotel.
