Lava Stone

Our suite still felt like a honeymoon fairytale, even though the honeymoon suite wasn’t available when we booked. The view was gorgeous and really did match the online photos. It was lovely to wake up to with coffee or a glass of the hotel-provided Mavrodaphne. Vicki was an incredible host, always responsive to messages and full of helpful recommendations.

We arrived and found that Lava Stone was completely inaccessible for anyone with mobility limitations. The stairs are uneven, there are no handrails, and none of this was mentioned in the listing. We had to find somewhere else to stay right away. The hotel wouldn’t help, and Hotels.com wouldn’t refund us despite the misleading listing. Future guests with mobility or disability concerns should know this property isn’t suitable for them. The three stars for service are only because the worker Vickie was amazing. The owners, not so much. If I were rating the owners, it would be one star.

The room was our own little retreat from the bustle, and a great base, especially after climbing the stairs to OÍa. We spent most mornings on the balcony with tea or coffee, watching Ammoudi Bay wake up in the peaceful morning light. In the evening, there were great chances to watch people and boats, and you could feel the energy from the seafood spots below. They handled our late arrival graciously and gave us plenty of tips on what to see and where to go. We absolutely loved our stay at Lava Stone.

The staff were kind and helpful, and room service was impeccable. The rooms are very comfortable, and the view makes the stair-only access worthwhile. If you’re okay staying outside Oia’s center, this is a great choice. If the climb from Ammoudi Bay up to Oia feels like too much, you can book a taxi to town for 20 Euros.
