Villa Maria Elounda is a quiet country house up on a hill above Elounda, surrounded by olive trees with no nearby neighbors. The view is beautiful, and the hosts were friendly and discreet. Still, there are a few things to weigh before booking. The drive up through the mountains is on a fairly narrow road, especially tricky if a car or large truck is coming the other way. The last 200 metres are off-road. On windy days, branches knock against the roof and make so much noise that it's hard to sleep. There's also a wastewater treatment plant nearby, and sometimes there's a bad smell in the air. The house itself is a simple, rather old country place without comforts, though the view is nice. It can be a good choice if you're aware of these issues.

This one-star rating is only about the pet policy. Their booking page says pets are allowed, but when I called to reserve, they turned me away because of my dog. They said they wouldn't have time to clean up the hair for the next guest. That's unacceptable when the listing says “pets welcome.” If you're traveling with a pet, find somewhere that will actually accept it instead of only saying so for appearances.

We were greeted on arrival by a very friendly host. The villa is in an olive grove, about 1.5 km uphill from the village, with a beautiful bay view. The house was excellent and more than enough for us, and there are several outdoor seating spots to choose from depending on the weather. The grounds are gated, the facilities are very good and the service was excellent. We'd highly recommend it! 👌👍
