Theano Apartments

A wasp stung me on the neck while I was asleep. I woke up reaching for it, and got stung. There were five more inside the room, coming from around the window and above the bed, so there must be a nest nearby. The location is great, right by the beach, but upkeep seems lacking. To me, it feels like a place that was great ten years ago and has been declining since. The restaurant wasn’t open either.

The location and the sea in Sarti were amazing. This was our first time in Sarti, Greece, and we wholeheartedly recommend a visit and a stay at Theano Apartments. Dimitri and the other staff were smiling, helpful, and wonderful.

I booked by email in February for the end of July and beginning of August, then wrote to the owners two weeks before we were due to arrive to check that everything was in order. When we got there, they said something had gone wrong with reservations made via Booking and our apartment wasn’t available. I can only guess that Booking guests mattered more because they could leave a review on the platform, even though we’d booked months earlier. They offered us another apartment, which I really hope isn’t what they generally give guests. It was simply disgusting and looked nothing like the photos on their site or Booking. The place was dirty, messy, and run down. I’m sorry I didn’t take a picture of the bathroom for this review. It wasn’t worth any amount of money for a decent vacation, and we had no way to stay there. We went home instead. At the peak of the season there was nowhere else to book, since everything was taken, so I had to cancel our family vacation for eight people. Please avoid this place at all costs.

This is a family-run place rather than a set of fully serviced apartments. There’s plenty of Greek charm, including friendly, hungry neighborhood cats that often come by. A lot of care and craftsmanship has gone into the outdoor area, which is attractive and pleasant. The apartment has air conditioning and a TV, though we never needed the TV, plus Wi-Fi. The indoor space could use a little TLC. For instance, the freezer compartment door was broken. We just asked for a bucket of ice for our tsipouro, and it was quickly brought up from the taverna. Self-catering is pretty basic, with a small fridge and hotplates. There’s a large taverna only 100 meters away, and plenty of other restaurants in the direction of both Sarti and Sykia, so there’s not much need for more.
