DO NOT BOOK HERE. I reserved a room, but what I got was a hostel. The advertising was misleading, communication was awful, and it felt like they cared more about money than fixing the problem. I went to reception because I didn’t want to stay in a hostel, and they wanted to charge me extra for an “upgrade.” Why should I pay more for the inconvenience they caused? My booking said Habitación Doble, not Hostel. When I asked for a refund, they first said they’d keep 20%, then changed it to 40%. Turns out my bank had already declined the charge as fraudulent, which I hadn’t realized. Fine by me. The amount they charge for this hostel is ridiculous. You can find a $17-a-night hostel inside Antigua square, and this was one of the worst I’ve seen. Bad hostels usually have 6-8 people in a room with bunk beds. Here it was one huge room divided by bamboo screens, with the bathroom in the same open area and no proper enclosure. You could hear people peeing in the middle of the night. I found a last-minute place with a real room and private bathroom for less. Their transport price was confusing too. They first quoted 35-40 usd, then said 50 usd, and dropped it to 45 when I pointed out the increase. I let that hiccup go.

Miguel was the one person who helped make things right. He stepped in and offered a compromise kindly and respectfully, after the American man at reception had been rude, unprofessional, and unhelpful. I asked for a refund for my remaining two nights, but he refused, saying he couldn’t do anything without the manager’s approval. The manager was supposedly in Colombia and couldn’t even be reached by phone. Miguel is the only redeeming quality here. I had booked a private hotel room, but on arrival they showed me a shared dorm. The beds were separated by bamboo partitions into partial cubicles, but everything was open and see-through, shared with several guests. The dorm was very noisy, and the layout seemed to let Casa Buho fit more people than a regular dorm. There was no roof overhead, so road sounds came through as if the bed were on the street. Passing motorcycles and cars, other guests, and dozens of birds screeching on the property kept me awake all night. It’s an expensive dorm in a dishonest, noisy establishment, far from the city. If you want a dorm, get one in Antigua. I’m certain this kind of false advertising is illegal in Guatemala, as it is everywhere.

I planned on staying three nights, but added a couple more because I was enjoying myself. The family hosting and the staff really wanted guests to have a great stay, and it was a surprise to learn the family speaks Swedish, of all things, in the middle of Guatemala. The garden, greenery, and decor were lovely. Everything was very clean, the room was comfortable, the shower was excellent, and the WiFi worked great. Breakfast was delicious each time. There were also a couple of cute birds and a cat on the property. This was my favorite place to stay in Guatemala.

The owners and staff were so friendly, and Brenda even walked me to the trailhead a few meters down the street for a hike I wanted to do. I’d happily stay again. I spent one night at the hostel and felt at ease there. It was exceptionally clean, cleaner than most hotel rooms I’ve had at the same price. There was hot water, free WiFi, and they even supplied bath towels.

Peter and his wife Herminda made me feel very welcome and at home. They’re friendly and caring, and will go to great lengths for their guests. If you enjoy an intelligent conversation, Peter shares his knowledge and education without charging you for it. Ask about the fruit and vegetables he grows at Casa, or his fish farm, and settle in for an enlightening chat. Best place to stay in Antigua.
