Grethel and jorje were so welcoming that I felt right at home. The hostel has a lovely terrace and lots of space elsewhere, though the room was a bit tight. It was clean and cheap, with hot showers and cold AC. The restaurant and shops on this side of the island are cheaper too, which helps keep things budget friendly. It’s across the lake, as I knew when I booked. Two boat trips are included, one on arrival and one when you leave. For my 2:30 am trip to the island for the Tikal sunrise tour, a driver was waiting in the lobby and charged 30Q. On the way back, I went to the shore and found a boat for 10Q without a wait.

The owner was easy to reach on WhatsApp whenever we needed a boat to the main island. The short ride usually cost just 5 GTQ, and the service was excellent the whole time. Our room was great too, with big comfortable beds, air conditioning, and a private bathroom, all for a very fair price.

I’d happily go back. It’s a peaceful, private spot by the water, with a really chill feel and beautiful scenery. The views seemed better than the places across on the other side, and it was easy to relax here in a way you can’t on the island. The price is reasonable for what you get: big comfortable beds, everything very clean, and kind, attentive staff. The food was both good and cheap. I had the restaurant pancakes every day. 😁

There was maintenance going on, and the whole house smelled of paint. Getting to the island also meant paying Q20 for every crossing. Once you’re here, you’re stuck with their overpriced boat as the only way across. Only one person speaks English, and he thinks he’s smart. I don’t usually leave bad reviews, but this place deserves one. I wouldn’t recommend it.

The hostel’s next to a really good taco place, with food better than almost anywhere on the island. Getting here means taking a boat across from Isla de Flores, but it’s very cheap and easy, and somehow makes the location feel more special. The host was lovely and welcoming and made me feel at home.
