The property has a lovely view from the hotel and pool, but the constant house music made it hard to relax. Several times, staff started loud maintenance work right beside us while we were trying to rest, including power-washing and carpentry. After a while it became almost comical how reliably a new noise would start whenever we settled down. My husband and I splurged on this for our honeymoon and came away very disappointed. We both got terribly sick from food we ate at Casa Prana and spent the stay stuck near the bathroom. The renovations seem designed to look old, but the materials felt low quality and cheap in person. It didn’t feel like a five-star experience. Communication is all by text. That may be convenient for some, but to me it felt impersonal. They wouldn’t provide their complimentary boat transportation just outside the check-in or check-out window, even though they have their own boats, and then charged more than ten times the local rate. Their activities were also wildly expensive. I asked about a two-hour guided hike starting from the Casa Prana remises and was quoted $268 per person. The prices are at the high end, but the accommodations and service didn’t match.

My girlfriend had dreamed of visiting Guatemala since she was young, and after seeing a video about Casa Prana, she spent years hoping to stay there for her birthday. We hired a concierge because we both work hard to afford a five-star hotel and don’t have time to handle all the check-in and checkout details ourselves. Are we supposed to be aliens for using a concierge? Apparently, after we had paid, the hotel cancelled our reservation because our concierge sent them a simple message. Her dream was crushed. They treated us like a number, despite the insanely high prices, and I wouldn’t recommend this place to my worst enemy. I hope nobody goes there. Bye, Casa Prana. See you never.

The gardens, flowers and private access to the lake make the property feel like a hidden sanctuary by day. After dark, candles along the paths and terraces make it lovely to wander around quietly. It feels much more like a private home than a regular hotel, with only eight rooms. Staff were warm and attentive without hovering, and service through the responsive WhatsApp chat was personal. There’s no set dining room, so you can have food and drinks anywhere on the property, and they can arrange a private bonfire wherever you like. Having the hotel organize tours around Lake Atitlán saved us from sorting out boat routes and other logistics, leaving more time to relax at Casa Prana. The food was good, but fell short of what I’d expect from a five-star boutique hotel. A stay longer than three nights could be a challenge for food options, especially with the last order at 8:30 pm and no late snacks. Some upkeep could also be better: the sunbed pillows had visible stains, and tiles around the heated pool, around 25 °C / 77 °F, were loose or broken. Communication sometimes felt disorganized. Tour descriptions didn’t always line up perfectly with the experience, and they asked for check-in details over both WhatsApp and email. Hotel-arranged services were noticeably more expensive, which is understandable but worth bearing in mind. I’d still highly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful, exclusive Lake Atitlán getaway.

We planned our trip around a two-night reservation we were excited about, but the hotel cancelled our rooms without giving a reason. They said only guests can book. I emailed and called, and got no reply. The rooms we’d booked were no longer available on the site, so I suspect they double-booked them, cancelled ours, then ignored us.

The property and setting are beautiful, and we really enjoyed the massages. For the price, though, I felt our room could have been better. Bring some cash in USD or local currency for stops around Lake Atitlan, since getting around means using water taxis. The hotel only provides a boat for check-in and checkout.
