Hotel Atitlán Hotel & Jardines

We spent 1.5-2 hours in the hotel’s Botanical Gardens on each of our two visits while in Panajachel. As non-guests in 2026, we got a coupon at the gate and paid 75 Quetzals per person at reception. That amount can go toward food. In both cases, another 100Q covered lunch with some change left. The Jocon sauce chicken was especially good, and the other meals were good too. The tuk-tuk there cost 20Q, and the hotel can arrange a ride back to town for 30Q. It’s a pleasant way to spend a few hours in a lovely setting.

The hotel is a little outside town, but you can ask for a tuk-tuk. The rooms are big, though there’s no a/c, and breakfast and the other food are delicious. It’s in a beautiful spot, with lake access and a well-kept botanical garden. They sell day passes too, so people who aren’t staying there can enjoy the atmosphere.

What makes this place feel so special is the garden and the lake view. The staff clearly put a lot of work into the grounds, and it really shows. My room was spacious, with a balcony looking out over the gardens and/or lake, and everything was spotless, even under the bed. The restaurant served good food, and the staff were professional and pleasant. They even helped me when I had a flat tire. I’ve stayed in beautiful hotels before, but this one felt one of a kind.

I’ve been coming here for decades, and it used to be a lovely break from everyday life, even though I live on the lake. This visit was a real disappointment. The service was awful and the workers’ attitude was negligible. It’s sad to see such a nice place looking rundown and seeming not to care for its guests. I doubt I’ll come back.
